Quantum Physics, sometimes

We just saw a lecture by Prof Brian Cox on his field: Quantum Physics.

was that a heartsink in your chest when u read that?? hahahaha jgn risau i am no physicist and i berhempas pulas studied for physics at school (nasib baik dapat A towards the end haha) because it certainly did not come naturally to me. and it still doesnt most times. a little grey matter wiring is making my brain work in a more logical and abstract way at the same time.

i still wince at the thought of the symbols and formulas, and the all famous mantra practice practice practice. haha.

Today punya lecture was filled with isi yang padat with language yg simple enough. sometimes kena rewind untuk see the kaitan but still cool nonetheless.

He talks about how everything in the world is made of atoms, and with some basic physics you would know there are the protons, neutrons with electrons surrounding the first two mengikut their own petala elektron (hahahahah lama gila tak guna petala).

He explains some core principles in physics and how it helps us understand the world around us.

He talked about different theories come together, making sense of Pauli's Exclusion Principle and Heisenburg's Principle.

Pauli's principle says "All electrons in the world cannot have the same energy levels". Nature or Sunatullah as far as i'm concerned lol, they like being in the lowest energy state rather than being excitable. Essentially, everything in this world seeks energy stability. But not everything can be as stable because of space limitations and so some electrons will have to deal with being more excitable than others. But when some energy (like heat) is supplied to some electrons, all other electrons in the universe will rearrange themselves as to accomodate that shift in energy. Agak cool when you think you can heat up water and all the electrons shift to accomodate your action. Gila butterfly effect lol. So if that true, the reason why two things dont go through each other is because the energy levels are stable enough, the electrons are happy being there and will repel each other so that's why your fingers dont fall apart when you type on your keyboard lol.

Heisenburg pula cerita: where an object's position will be is very much related to its size. Prof Cox cerita how a diamond placed in a 5cm cube box and cuba predict where it will be. You plug in values in the Heisenburg equation (yang include the hebat Plank's constant), and apparently the diamond will be there for more than 3 x 10^29 seconds (berapa tahun tu?). so the smaller the object is, the harder will it be for you to pinpoint its location/momentum. Personally I think this is true on an everyday basis: the smaller the earring/key/coin, lagi susah predict where it is lol.

Pastu datang seorang makhluk who says White Dwarfs yg muncul when a star dies out of habis fuel (oxygen and hydrogen habis guna, so tinggal carbon) and so tiada energy to burn anymore, it collapses because of the electrons trying to find a stable energy level dengan ketiadaan fuel while repelling each other (sebab electron n electron akan repel) and so yang tinggal ialah a big lump of carbon atoms under tremendous pressure ie a diamond in the sky. I think this lump of carbon wont emit cahaya sbb fuel dah habis but Pojan thinks there might be some form of light reflection from other stars yg still burning and lagipun diorg besar. Tapi the stars we see on Earth is billions of light years away so cm I rasa tak nampak anyway.

so that was today's lecture.

few months ago i saw this brilliant documentary, title dia: Everything and Nothing by Prof Jim Al-Khalili

again,
we all know everything kt bumi is made of matter and every matter ada mass, yes? and vaccuum kt luar atmosphere bumi itu takde apa2. Empty space, vaccuum - nothing. but apparently there is something in that nothing ness.

It explores the existence of anti matter. think of it of the exact opposite of matter. so its like ok, you have space yg 'kosong'. and out of this nothingness, it splits into matter and anti-matter sekejap. and then they bergabung again and disappear. and billions of these things happening at the same time.

Kan the law of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but rather changed from one form to another? so its saying by temporarily pinjam energy, it splits up into matter and anti matter and then dia pulangkan balik just as quick.

haha......cool kan? i mmg suka la kan benda2 tak nampak ni sebab i kinda think anything is possible in this world. so when ada evidence of something out of nothing it reaffrims what i feel is already there. hahaha logic ka? or maybe because i always see this tiny dots yg sgt banyak yg impossible to keep track of and i think of it as available energy kt bumi ni. syok sendiri! looool and say if betul la those are really materialisation of energy pun, i cant harvest them for myself.

..or maybe i just dont know how yet! *dum dum dummmmm*
hahahaha

so the theory of Big Bang came about, this series is talking precisely about this. muncul out of no where and became matter as we see it now.

u know the deal with Einstein's E=mc2 theory? its an equation about energy tau (explained by encik suami) where by E itu represent energy, m itu mass and c itu speed of light. so by right, if we know the mass of something by multiplying it with speed of light squared that is how much energy that mass possess.

of course i terfikir myself as soon as dia cerita cmtu. and the term 'so if i burst' came out and agak kelakar when we spoke of me bursting and how much energy that would come out of me lol.

gabungkan nothing and infinity in the same breath

there. i dah tulis whatever it is i know about Quantum Physics. i suka :D

ohh btw, i googled Prof Brian Cox. agak cool ok. kalau nak bukti professor physics and rock star, itulah beliau lol. apparently dia part of a band masa dia (lebih) muda, main keyboard buat tour suma looool. and dia pernah dapat D untuk maths loooool skarang PhD Quantum Physics la kan. habis cool la mamat ni.

Dia, Prof Jim Al-Khalili and Ustaz Nouman Ali Khan i ultra-respect coz they berjaya explain to the lay people about their field in simple language yg relatable. (Quantum Physics for the first two, and Tafsir Quran on Ustaz - especially love his Quran Weekly segments on youtube!)
